How to Prepare Your Apartment before Going on a Summer Vacation

Getting ready to take a summer vacation before school starts again or the temperatures start to decrease? Now is the best time to take advantage of the great summer weather. Prior to heading out on the open road or to the airport for your summer vacation, there are several things you should remember to do for your apartment.

Finishing a few simple tasks before your departure will ensure that your return home will not be a chore. Follow the tips below to prepare your apartment correctly before your vacation.

The Day before Leaving for Vacation

Set an email autoreply. If you receive many emails a day for work, school, or activities you are involved in, make sure you install an autoreply message while you are gone. Doing this can ensure that anyone trying to contact you will know you are away and they are not being forgotten or ignored.

Be sure to organize and clean your apartment. You never want to come home from a vacation to an apartment that is messy and have to spend hours cleaning it.

A few things to take care of before you leave are vacuuming and sweeping the whole apartment, doing all of your laundry and putting the clothes away after, changing your bed sheets, and cleaning out all of the leftovers/perishables from your refrigerator.

This will leave your house smelling fresh and clean for you when you arrive home.

Set out all of your packed bags and supplies. Be sure to place everything you are bringing on your trip by the front door so that you can wake up and go. If there are a few things that you are not able to pack the night before you leave for vacation, like your phone charger or toothbrush, write yourself a sticky note as a reminder.

The Day of Departure

Be sure to save energy and keep your apartment maintained. This can be done by keeping your AC down while you are away. Remember to turn off and unplug your electronics as well.

Another important tip to follow is eliminating fire hazards. Before you leave, be sure your oven and stove are off and there are no candles left burning in your apartment. If you own a coffee maker with a timer on it, or made coffee in the morning, you should unplug it while you are on vacation just to be safe.

Be sure to make your bed. After arriving home from a long trip, there is nothing better than seeing a bed that is all made and clean waiting for your next night of rest.

The last thing you should remember to do is to take out the trash. Any food in the trash can, can really make the whole apartment smell bad if you leave it sit in there for a few days or more. Please do not forget to take out the trash before your departure!

If you do all of the things listed above, and lock all of your windows and doors on the way out, you will come home to a clean space that will relax you and ease you back into your daily routine.
